Russell Crowe’s Horror Reboot Is Already Losing Steam Ahead Of New 2027 Release

Russell Crowe has had some huge successes in theaters and on streaming, but his new title does not bode well. The actor has made a wide range of work over the course of his career, from his Oscar-winning role in Ridley Scott's Gladiator to less serious horror movie roles in recent years in The Pope's Exorcist and The Exorcism. This year, Crowe has a trilogy of titles to his name, appearing on-screen in The Get Out, Beast, and the recently released The Weight.

Nearly a decade ago, Crowe starred in a horror fantasy reboot: 2017's The Mummy. This Tom Cruise-led reboot attempt was a mixed bag in terms of success. Critics hated the film. It earned just a 15% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, a rotten score that paled in comparison to the 1999 movie's relatively positive 64% Tomatometer. It fared better at the box office, making $409.2 million worldwide. On its estimated $125 million budget, The Mummy likely just barely broke even.

Crowe's The Mummy Has Already Lost Its Streaming Run

The Mummy had a brief bout of success on streaming recently, but it has just lost its streak. It cracked the top 10 on Amazon Prime's top 10 movies and even top 10 overall. On September 14, it even peaked at no. 5 on the movie chart. The Mummy quickly fell off that overall list, however, and has since even fallen off the movies list. At the time of writing, the 2017 reboot film is on neither list, officially losing its trending spot. While it could still resurface on the list, it has lost momentum.

Meanwhile, another Crowe film currently sits on the streamer's top 10 movies for September 20. This is the 2024 Australian film Sleeping Dogs, which starred Crowe as a former homicide detective who is riddled with amnesia who is trying to solve a murder mystery. This film made dramatically less than The Mummy during its theatrical run, grossing just $2.1 million worldwide. If Sleeping Dogs is the more successful Crowe film on streaming right now, this is a bad sign for The Mummy's hope at regaining its streaming spot.

The Franchise Is On The Verge Of Returning

The Mummy franchise is also on the precipice of returning to theaters. There is a yet-untitled Mummy project set for release in October 2027. While it does not have a plot yet, this version is slated to bring back Brendan Fraser in the role he originated in 1999, following the original characters rather than the reboot cast. Nonetheless, the fact that The Mummy's 2017 reboot film cannot maintain its place on the streaming charts does not bode well for this upcoming franchise installment.
