Exim Bank to commence a 200-acre textile industrial area for Weta, targeting 3,000 jobs – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish a light industrial area dedicated to textile and garment manufacturing at Weta in the Volta Region through the Ghana Export-Import Bank (Ghana EXIM Bank).

The President said 200 acres of land had been acquired for the project, which is expected to create thousands of employment opportunities when fully operational.

Speaking at the grand durbar of the 2026 Hogbetsotso Festival in Anloga, President Mahama said he had commissioned the Ghana Export-Import Bank (Ghana EXIM Bank) to commence work on the industrial enclave.

He said the project would initially create approximately 3,000 jobs, with the figure expected to increase to 10,000 as operations expand.

"We have commissioned the Ghana EXIM Bank to commence work on a Light Industrial Area in the Weta area. Two hundred acres of land have been acquired," he noted.

"This industrial area will be dedicated to the textile and garment industry," the president added.

"We expect that initially, when it starts, it will create some 3,000 jobs and grow eventually to 10,000 jobs when it is fully operational," Mr Mahama disclosed.

The proposed Weta industrial area is expected to strengthen the Volta Region's industrial base, particularly in textile and garment production, while creating employment opportunities for residents, CEO of the EXIM Bank, Sylvester Adinam Mensah, said in September during the 2026 yam festival of the chiefs and people of Asogli Traditional Area.

President Mahama's announcement follows a similar investment in the Northern Region, where President Mahama in August 2026 commissioned the Northshore Apparel Ghana Limited factory at Savelugu.

The facility, funded through a partnership involving Ghana EXIM Bank, Germany's KfW Development Bank and the Agricultural Development Bank, is designed to manufacture garments for local and international markets.

The Northshore Apparel project has already created employment for more than 2,300 people, with the workforce expected to increase to 10,000 when the facility reaches full operational capacity.

President Mahama described the Savelugu facility as a major step towards restoring Northern Ghana's industrial prominence and advancing the government's 24-hour economy agenda.

The proposed Weta project, also expected to be supported by Ghana EXIM Bank, signals the government's intention to extend garment and textile manufacturing investments to other parts of the country.
