Trump orders federal agencies to replace ‘AI’ with ‘super intelligence’

US president Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday directing the federal government to replace the term “artificial intelligence,” commonly abbreviated as “AI,” with “super intelligence,” or “SI,” in official executive branch communications, Anadolu Ajansi reported.

The order directs federal departments and agencies to use “super intelligence” and “SI” in official correspondence, public communications, policy documents and other non-statutory materials. Agencies are also instructed to stop using the terms “artificial intelligence” and “AI” in those materials.

The order directs the assistant to the president for Science and Technology to develop a proposed federal definition of “super intelligence” and “SI” reflecting the “continuously advancing technological frontier.”

The official is also tasked with identifying any additional executive actions needed to implement the proposed definition.

The White House said the terminology change is intended to recognise the “immense opportunity” presented by emerging technologies.

According to the administration, the US is the world leader in super intelligence and should use terminology that reflects the capabilities and potential of technologies being developed.

The administration described the US as the birthplace of artificial intelligence and said the country has led the development and deployment of the technology for more than 70 years since AI became a field of research.
