Star Trek has always been an adventurous series that's never shied away from exploring new territory. Over its 60-year history, the franchise has repeatedly pushed beyond straightforward science fiction, borrowing from genres as varied as horror, political drama, courtroom thriller, comedy, war stories, and even the occasional Western.

Individual episodes have often transformed familiar crews and settings to experiment with entirely different tones, while later series have embraced darker serialized storytelling and other approaches that would have seemed unusual during The Original Series era.

That willingness to reinvent itself has helped Star Trek stay flexible across six decades, allowing its universe to accommodate stories that go far beyond traditional space exploration and even into the realm of puppetry in the controversial recent episode of Strange New Worlds. And now, this upcoming release arriving on October 20 will take Star Trek in a direction fans will find quite fitting given the focus on exploring unknown worlds.

Star Trek Heads Into The Unknown During The 23rd Century Timeline

Star Trek Outposts Unknown

Star Trek is officially heading into new territory on October 20 with Star Trek: Outposts Unknown, a narrative-driven strategy game that puts an emphasis on building and colony management as opposed to the franchise's usual sci-fi action adventures. Developer Magic Fuel Games describes it as the first-ever outpost builder set in the Star Trek universe, effectively transforming the familiar mission of exploring strange new worlds into one of establishing a permanent presence on them.

Instead of simply commanding a starship and moving from one mission to the next, players will construct complex research facilities, unlock technology and building trees, and decide which structures are necessary to keep their operation running. Resource management and logistics are also important, while individual crew members can be assigned different tasks and officers developed as the situation becomes increasingly dangerous. Crew morale and survival add another management layer.

Importantly, Outposts Unknown still sounds unmistakably like Star Trek beneath that genre shift. Its original story takes place during the 23rd century, alongside the era depicted in Strange New Worlds, and sends players into the X'Lehari System to help a civilization facing catastrophe. A mysterious cosmic force threatening the wider system provides the larger conflict.

The result is a clever inversion of one of Star Trek's oldest ideas. This time, boldly going somewhere new is only the beginning, and players then have to figure out how to build there and survive.

Star Trek: Outposts Unknown Arrives October 20

Star Trek: Outposts Unknown is scheduled to launch on October 20, 2026, with Magic Fuel Games developing the title and Playstack serving as publisher. For now, the game has only been confirmed for PC through Steam, and no PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or other console versions have been announced. Steam currently lists Windows system requirements, including a minimum of 16 GB of RAM and approximately 10 GB of available storage.

One major detail remains unconfirmed just two weeks ahead of release: the price. As of October 5, the Steam page does not list a purchase price or provide an option to preorder the game. Players can instead wishlist Outposts Unknown to receive a notification when it becomes available on October 20.

A playable demo was previously released on Steam following the game's June announcement, providing roughly three hours of narrative gameplay and an early look at its resource-management systems. However, that demo does not appear to be available anymore, with the current Steam listing offering only the option to wishlist. Outposts Unknown is being released as a single-player experience and will support Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, and Family Sharing when it drops later this month.
