A Taichung-based doctor said there has been a spike in wart removals after the Mid-Autumn Festival weekend last month, urging safe sex over the upcoming three-day Double Ten National Day holiday.
Huang Pin-jui (黃品叡), head of urology at the Dajia branch of Lee’s General Hospital, said on Friday that the hospital saw human papillomavirus (HPV) cases after the long weekend.
Huang stressed that reducing the risk of genital wart re-infection depends on follow-up care, vaccination and practicing safe sex.

Using protection remains essential to sexual health even for those who have been fully vaccinated against the HPV, because receiving three shots does not confer complete immunity to every strain of the virus, he said.
This is especially true if one has multiple sexual partners or recently entered into a sexual relationship with someone new, he added.
HPV infections also have a high recurrence rate, meaning those who have received surgical treatment should return for follow-up consultations as instructed by their doctors and stay vigilant about sexual health, he said.
