Penang Hospital carries out third kidney retrieval this year

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Hospital has successfully retrieved both kidneys from a deceased donor, marking its third such procedure this year.

The state Health Department and Penang Hospital said the donor was a woman who served as her family's breadwinner and died after suffering a ruptured intracranial aneurysm.

The woman had previously expressed her intention to become an organ donor, with her decision supported by her mother.

The successful procedure involved close coordination among the hospital's urology, neurosurgery, anaesthesiology, operating theatre, dietetics and catering, pathology, radiology and forensic departments.

The department said the hospital's Transport Unit, Organ Procurement Unit and National Transplant Centre also contributed to the kidney retrieval.

In August, Penang Hospital also illuminated its building in green as a tribute to organ donors and their families.
