'Struck her with stones': After rape, Delhi man kills 10-year old in fear

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police has filed a chargesheet in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in south Delhi’s Mehrauli in June. According to the chargesheet, the accused allegedly did not kill the girl immediately after sexually assaulting her.He initially planned to bring her back but decided to kill her after fearing that she might inform her parents about the assault.The chargesheet, which was filed on Friday, runs into more than 500 pages and includes statements from over 30 witnesses.Basu Kumar Singh, 25, is the sole accused named in the case. He has been charged under provisions relating to rape, murder and kidnapping, besides sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and other relevant laws.Police said Singh was waiting near CDR Chowk when he spotted the girl and allegedly abducted her. According to the account recorded by investigators, he took her to Mandi, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her. He then allegedly strangled her, struck her with stones and left her body in a forested area near the Delhi-Gurgaon border. He was arrested later. Singh’s driving licence was found near the girl’s body.The accused was later shot at after he allegedly snatched a weapon from an officer during a crime-scene reconstruction and attempted to escape, investigators said.

On the day the minor was abducted, her father heard cries for help and chased the cab, but in vain. He later provided a key lead by recalling that the vehicle was a white car with a yellow commercial registration plate. Police subsequently traced the vehicle.Investigators subsequently found that Singh had at least five cases registered against him in his hometown of Khagaria, Bihar, between 2015 and 2022. The cases include allegations related to attempt to murder, rioting and molestation.
