Lagos APC deputy gov candidate urges Christian political participation

The All Progressives Congress Deputy Governorship Candidate in Lagos State, Damilola Sonayon-James, has urged Christian leaders and young people to take a more active role in politics.

She spoke last week at a prayer and mobilisation programme organised by the Lagos Directorate of Christian Affairs of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors.

Grassroots coordinators were inaugurated across the state’s 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas as part of mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The programme also featured prayers for President Bola Tinubu and the APC governorship candidate in Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat.

Sonayon-James said political participation should not be left to politicians alone, stressing that decisions made by government directly affect the welfare of citizens.

She urged Christian leaders to participate actively in the political process and encouraged parents to support young people who wished to engage in politics.

The deputy governorship candidate also appealed to young people to participate in efforts to address issues affecting them, saying the Federal Government had responded to some concerns raised by youths.

She described Hamzat as a leader of integrity and someone with a community-oriented approach, while assuring supporters that an APC administration in Lagos would work for the benefit of residents.

The Lagos State Coordinator of the organisation and Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Tayo Akinmade Ayinde, urged the coordinators to understand the specific challenges of their communities and work towards bringing people together.

Ayinde described the gathering as both a prayer and mobilisation exercise, urging the coordinators to take the Renewed Hope message to churches and communities across Lagos.

The Director of the Directorate of Christian Affairs, Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Sam Ogedengbe, said the group had been using prayer walks, church outreaches and sensitisation programmes to engage Christian communities across the state.

He said the directorate was supporting Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid and Hamzat’s governorship campaign, citing policies including the CNG initiative, student loans, local government autonomy and infrastructure development.

Ogedengbe also appealed for vehicles to support the directorate’s grassroots mobilisation activities, saying the organisation would continue engaging churches and communities ahead of the elections.
