Looted shops, burning barricades as riots erupt in Frankfurt

Translate

Police remained on the streets of Frankfurt on Sunday after rioting and looting broke out following youth demonstrations, leaving shopfronts smashed, fires burning and several people injured.

Police remained on duty in central Frankfurt on Sunday, 1 November, after riots broke out following a demonstration the previous day. Footage shows smashed shop windows, looted stores, burning barricades and debris scattered across the streets. Police used water cannon to extinguish fires and clear obstacles from the roads.

Several protesters and police officers were injured, while 30 people were detained. The situation had calmed by early Sunday morning after police cordoned off parts of the city centre.

Hesse state premier Boris Rhein condemned the violence, saying he was shocked by the events and that those responsible would face consequences.

Violence was also reported in Cologne, where police used water cannon to disperse crowds, and in Berlin, where protesters attacked officers with bottles and pyrotechnics.
