From Donki to Nike: Analyst says Duterte had ‘unusual’ purchases in 2025

MANILA, Philippines — Just like any other ordinary tourist, Vice President Sara Duterte appears to be an avid fan of Japan’s discount store Don Quijote, as an analyst called by the prosecution panel claimed that she spent more than P200,000 for two stores on two different occasions using her credit card.
At the tail end of Duterte’s impeachment trial at the Senate on Friday, public prosecutor and Akbayan party-list Rep. Chel Diokno questioned their witness, financial forensic analyst Atty. Alexander Cabrera, about Table 25 of his report, which listed the transactions made by Duterte using her credit card.
Cabrera then said that among Duterte’s “unusual banking behavior” were a meal at Ginza Inakaya Tokyo in Japan worth P200,007.29 with a transaction date of March 19, 2025; and two transactions on Dec. 27, 2025 with the Nike store at a Davao City mall worth P93,750.00 and P205,392.00.

(We can see here, at the first line, the amount that seems to be used to pay a restaurant for an amount of P205,000 in a single transaction only, and this could be a dinner at Ginza Inakaya Tokyo in Japan.)

“In one day po mayroon pong purchase from Nike SM Davao po, ’yong dalawang transaction po na ‘yon ay totaling P300,000,” he added. “Gano’n din po no’ng last line po na purchase naman po from Nike Pavilion in Kuala Lumpur, isang araw din po na purchase one transaction worth P256,882.50.”
(In one day, there was a purchase from Nike SM Davao; the two transactions will total P300,000. That is almost the same as the purchase from Nike Pavilion in Kuala Lumpur, a purchase in a single day, one transaction worth P256,882.50.)

Other unusual banking behavior
Cabrera did not mention Duterte’s other unusual banking behavior, but his Table 25 showed that she had gone shopping at two sites in MEGA Don Quijote outlets.
Don Quijote is a discount store chain in Japan offering a variety of items—from Japanese-made toiletries, toys, gadgets, souvenirs, and even food products.

Two transactions referred to a Don Quijote in Shibuya, one of the main business and entertainment hotspots in Tokyo — with one worth P62,900.95 and the other being P65,877.64, both made on Dec. 8, 2025.
The other Don Quijote outlet that Duterte transacted with is in Aichi prefecture, specifically in Naka-ward. The transaction on July 20, 2025 was worth P111,109.24.
The total for all of Duterte’s unusual banking behavior listed in the exhibit was at P239.8 million.
Cabrera was brought to testify on the financial transactions of Duterte and Carpio. According to the witness, Duterte did not declare the following cash amounts as part of her assets from 2022 to 2025:
- P60,214,776 for 2022
- P80,701,151 for 2023
- P23,169,077 for 2024
- P43,611,929 for 2025
Cabrera did not provide a total for the four figures, but a quick math would show that the sum is P207,696,933.
Aside from this, the table presented by Cabrera showed that the total undeclared amount from 2022 to 2025 was P817,874,867. According to the witness, they were able to arrive at this number by matching the declared cash assets in Duterte’s SALN and the year-end balances of the bank accounts under Duterte, Carpio, and their joint bank accounts.

Discussions on Article II started with the legal framework of unexplained wealth, but by October, the focus had shifted to Duterte’s bank accounts, after the prosecution presented Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) Executive Director Ronel Buenaventura as their witness last Monday and Tuesday.
Buenaventura confirmed before the Senate Impeachment Court that they have indeed flagged several transactions involving Duterte and her relatives worth P4.4 billion. At one point, Buenaventura testified that Duterte and her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, had made P193 million worth of unique bank transactions in just one day—on March 28, 2014.

At one point during the trial, Buenaventura was asked by Escudero whether even an “absurd possibility” of totaling all of Duterte’s net worth from 2007 to 2025 can even make sense of the P4.4 billion transactions, even if this should not be the case. /cb
