Avengers: Endgame Encore's Post-Credits Secretly Rewrite Spider-Man: Brand New Day — MCU Theory Explained

Avengers: Endgame Encore's post-credits scene may have already explained a mystery from Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and revealed the plot of Avengers: Doomsday. Seven years later, Marvel has rewritten the end of Avengers: Endgame. But this is a very different situation to the Star Wars Special Editions, where George Lucas felt the movies were imperfect and wanted to improve them in his own eyes. In contrast, this is all about adding setup for Doomsday, with the Russo brothers inserting new footage designed to serve as a bridge to the next Avengers blockbuster.

Probably the most important new Avengers: Doomsday scene is one featuring Bruce Banner, set in the aftermath of Brand New Day. In this scene, Banner has hidden himself away in an underground prison he believes even the Hulk can't break out of. To his shock, though, an intruder breaks into the prison and spirits him away. The scene doesn't show who is responsible, but we hear a very familiar voice, and there's a Latverian rune. It seems Bruce Banner's role in Doomsday is now being set up — but there's actually a subtle hint that ties to Brand New Day in another way.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Post-Credits Set Up A Peter Parker Mystery

Spider-Man: Brand New Day's post-credits dropped an amusing tease to the wall-crawler's future via Ned Leeds' Spider-Tracker app. According to this app, Spider-Man mysteriously vanishes from New York; but he's subsequently discovered in the depth of space, perhaps on another Earth or (some theorize) the Battleworld planet that Doctor Doom will create for next year's Avengers: Secret Wars.

But attentive viewers over on social media have spotted a fun detail: before the Spider Tracker shows the webhead's location, there's a weird visual glitch. This is almost exactly the same effect in Avengers: Endgame Encore's post-credits scene, when Doom spirits Bruce Banner away from Earth-616.

According to this theory, there's a narrative throughline between these two post-credits scenes: Doctor Doom has taken two people from Earth-616, Bruce Banner and Spider-Man. What's more, another new Endgame Encore scene appears to reveal where he's taken Spider-Man (and, therefore, likely where he's taken Banner as well).

Has Spider-Man Been Taken To Another Earth?

Another Endgame Encore scene shows Mobius M. Mobius at the TVA, watching in horror as different Earths wage war against one another as universes collide. According to these, such a collision initially manifests when two versions of Earth are visible in one another's skies. Mobius is stunned to see Earths launch attacks on one another, each trying to destroy the other to save themselves.

The implication is clear: if an incursion affects Earth-616, then another Earth will be seen in the skies. That fits with Thunderbolts*' post-credits scene, too, where Yelena complains nobody is keeping her New Avengers team in the loop about some sort of crisis in space. If Tom Holland's Spider-Man has been sighted in space, then the conclusion is obvious: he's been moved to another Earth, one colliding with Earth-616.

Why Would Doctor Doom Take Spider-Man (& The Hulk) To Another Earth?

This naturally raises a simple question: Why would Doctor Doom transport Spider-Man and Bruce Banner to another Earth? An answer may be offered through the science of incursions, explained in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This revealed they occur when the boundary between two universes thins due to people crossing over. In other words, there's one easy way for someone to cause two universes to collide: transport people from one Earth over to another. If Doom has moved Spider-Man and Bruce Banner over to another Earth, it has the potential to cause incursions that affect Earth-616.

Three Earths are confirmed to be part of Avengers: Doomsday: Earth-616, an X-Men universe, and the Fantastic Four's Earth-828. If Spider-Man is on another Earth in the post-credits scene, it stands to reason he's likely been transported to Earth-828. That would fit with Thunderbolts*' post-credits scene, where the Fantastic Four's spaceship the Excelsior is seen heading to Earth during the crisis in space Yelena has mentioned. We'd previously assumed the Fantastic Four had figured out how to travel between dimensions, but their Earth could simply be hovering in 616's skies.

It's difficult to say whether Bruce Banner, too, has been transported to Earth-828. In the comics, there's a famous rivalry between the Hulk and the Thing; it would be incredible to see the two trade blows. A post-Hulk-transformation Banner could well be very helpful to the Fantastic Four, telling them to go to Wakanda on his own Earth for help. As smart as Spider-Man may be, he's less likely to think of Shuri.

Alternatively, Doom could have sent the Hulk to the X-Men timeline. The Hulk has just as famous a rivalry with Wolverine, and there have been constant rumors Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is in Doomsday. Bruce Banner could therefore be the cause of Doomsday's next collision, bringing a third Earth into play.

Whatever the truth may be, this theory is a compelling one: it turns Doctor Doom into the cause of the incursions tearing the multiverse apart, albeit one who is concealing his strategy. It explains the post-credits scenes of not one but three movies, drawing them together into a single narrative. It doesn't explain why Doom wants to destroy the multiverse, or why this is "Doom's Day." But that, presumably, is the movie's central mystery — one that viewers aren't supposed to be able to guess.
