Taylor Sheridan's 3-Part Military Thriller Series Is The Perfect Binge Before Sicario 3

Translate

Zach Moser has been writing for ScreenRant since 2022, covering movies, classic TV, and streaming TV. His areas of expertise cover a wide range of genres with a particular interest in horror and drama, and the conversations around the TV and film industry. When he's not covering the latest film releases or chronicling the latest season of a new show, he's writing humor pieces for McSweeney's Internet Tendency, Slackjaw, and Points In Case or working on short stories and his second novel.

Taylor Sheridan has a three-season military thriller that is the perfect thing to binge-watch before Sicario 3 arrives. Taylor Sheridan keeps plugging away, both on television and in film. He's arguably one of the biggest names in TV production, alongside Dick Wolf, Shonda Rhimes, and Ryan Murphy.

Every year it feels like he has a new show or movie coming out. In 2026 alone, he produced three new series, Marshals and Dutton Ranch, spinoffs of Yellowstone, and The Madison, an original modern western series. Four of his scripted series are still pumping out new seasons as well.

Sheridan is not afraid to take his stories and stretch them as far as the audience is willing to go. His 2015 hit Sicario is still going. In 2018, he wrote the story for Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which Stefano Sollima directed, and the franchise will continue with the recently confirmed, untitled Sicario 3.

While we wait for Sicario 3, you can check out one of Sheridan's shows that's in a similar register. Lioness is his three-season-and-counting spy thriller that premiered on Paramount+ in July 2023. Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman, and Morgan Freeman lead an ensemble cast in the contemporary thriller.

The series follows CIA officer Joe McNamara (Saldaña), the leader of an all-female operatives team called "Lioness" who infiltrates the inner circles of enemy combatants through the women related to them. Each season finds the Lioness team taking on a new enemy, and examines the increasing psychological burden these espionage activities take.

Lioness Is One Of Taylor Sheridan's Best TV Shows

Lioness may very well be the best of Sheridan's long list of TV shows. It may be because, unlike many of the series he produces, Sheridan is the writer and showrunner for Lioness. The series has only increased in quality as the seasons have gone on, with Sheridan figuring out what makes the story so strong.

Saldaña arguably gives the best performance of any actor in any of Sheridan's shows, and she's surrounded by a capable ensemble who breathe life into the script, even when it gets a little overwrought in the way Sheridan lines can sometimes be. The action thriller genre may suit Sheridan's sensibilities better than anything.

For as much as he's associated with Westerns, Sheridan's two best projects are Sicario and Wind River, both contemporary action thrillers. Lioness is inventive, with impressive and surprising cinematography and a tone that may surprise people going into the show.

What To Know About Sicario 3

Sicario 3 does not have a release date at the moment, but a few things have been revealed. For one, it appears that Sheridan will not be involved with the film, the first time that's been the case in the trilogy. Padraic McKinley, director of The Weight, will be in the director's chair while Peaky Blinders' writer Steven Knight is penning the script.

Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro will be reprising their roles as Alejandro Gillick and Matt Graver from the first two films, and Emily Blunt will return as Kate Macer from the first film, but who was absent from the second. There are 24 episodes in Lioness, and there's plenty of time to binge the show before Sicario 3 arrives.
