Canada’s capital to erase Trump Avenue from map as relations with US sour

MONTREAL, Sept 25 — Canada is answering US President Donald Trump’s obsession with renaming things by unveiling a name change of its own — Trump Avenue in Ottawa will soon be history.

The city is hitting back at the US leader, who among other things insists Canada should cease to exist as a country and instead become the 51st US state.

The Ottawa city council voted unanimously Wednesday night to yank Trump’s name from a leafy residential neighbourhood of the capital.

“I don’t like the idea of anything that’s named for Donald Trump, who’s demonstrated hostility towards Canada, in our city,” Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said.

The street that used to be Trump Avenue is in an area called Central Park, which features many roads alluding to New York, Trump’s hometown.

People who live on the former Trump Avenue are now to form a committee to decide on a new name which will take effect next year. It will retain its current name until then.

Relations between the neighbours and longtime close allies have soured dramatically under Trump with his aggressive America-first mindset and disdain for longstanding alliances and relationships.

Since early in his second term, he has slapped Canada with tariffs and more recently said the US government would now call Lake Ontario, on the countries’ border, Lake America.

Trump has also insulted and mocked Prime Minister Mark Carney on social media. — AFP
