Jakarta eyes seawater desalination as drought threat grows

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) proposal to desalinate seawater to anticipate drought could be implemented once construction of the Giant Sea Wall begins.

"To convert seawater into usable fresh water, one of the prerequisites is that the Giant Sea Wall project must get underway," Pramono said in Jakarta on Thursday.

According to Pramono, once the Giant Sea Wall project starts, the supply of brackish water will be sufficient to be processed into fresh water for daily use.

"If that can be done, then the supply of brackish or fresh water, which can be processed into water suitable for public use, will be available. The Jakarta Provincial Government, through PAM Jaya, is ready to carry this out," Pramono stated.

Previously, Jakarta DPRD Speaker Suhud Alynudin proposed that the Jakarta Provincial Government begin anticipating clean water shortages caused by drought by processing seawater into clean water using desalination technology.

"Desalination exists in the Thousand Islands, converting seawater into clean, fresh water. I believe we should start doing this elsewhere to anticipate a clean water shortage in Jakarta," Alynudin said.

Alynuding believes the potential for drought must be addressed seriously, as such conditions could persist for an extended period and impact the community.

Therefore, Alynudin urged the Jakarta Provincial Government to prepare anticipatory measures, including utilizing water sources available in areas surrounding Jakarta.

Meanwhile, the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has issued an early warning of meteorological drought in several areas of Jakarta.

Based on an analysis by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), parts of Jakarta were placed in the "Warning" (Awas) drought category for September 11-20.

The five areas placed under the category are West Jakarta, Central Jakarta, East Jakarta, North Jakarta, and the Thousand Islands.
