Agricultural damage in Zambales town reaches over P2.54 million


SAN ANTONIO, Zambales — Initial agricultural damage in the Zambales town of San Marcelino has reached P2.54 million due to floods and heavy rains brought by recent weather disturbances and the southwest monsoon.
The town’s Sta. Fe village was among the areas heavily affected by flooding with the destruction of newly planted rice crops that were mostly at their reproductive stage, according to the San Marcelino Public Information Office (PIO) on Thursday (Aug. 20).Mature palay were also destroyed.

The partial report of the Municipal Agriculture Office says rice crops accounted for the largest share of the losses, with P1.42 million worth of crops totally damaged across 46 hectares.

Another P128,481.66 worth of rice crops covering 12.4 hectares were partially damaged.
The assessment also recorded P47,840 in damage to high-value crops, including P40,000 worth of totally damaged crops covering 0.3 hectare and P7,840 worth of partially damaged crops covering 0.03 hectare.
Livestock losses were estimated at P220,000, while aquaculture damage valued at P166,000, including P147,000 in Barangay Sta. Fe and P19,000 in Barangay San Rafael.
Agricultural infrastructure sustained an estimated P525,000 in damage, while agricultural machinery accounted for another P36,000 in losses.

The figures remain subject to validation as authorities continue assessing conditions in different areas of the municipality.
The latest assessment comes after days of heavy rains that caused widespread flooding in San Marcelino, particularly in low-lying communities.

In Barangay Sta. Fe, around 800 residents on the northern side of the Sta. Fe River have remained isolated since Aug. 9 after floodwaters damaged a portion of the dike and swept away a bridge.
The river also overflowed on Aug. 19, sending floodwaters into the barangay hall and multi-purpose hall. /jpv
