Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami has fired shots at critics questioning his fitness, reminding them that his performances on the field speak louder than words and those who doubt his ability. Shami continues to let the ball do the talking despite the selectors ignoring him time and again, and insisted that he will continue to enjoy his game instead of thinking about his return to the national side. The 36-year-old made the remarks after taking four wickets for Bengal in their Ranji Trophy 2026-27 opener against Delhi in Kalyani.

"People perhaps enjoy looking and passing comments more. They say the rhythm isn't there, that he doesn't look fit, or whatever else. It doesn't bother me. I'm on the ground, I'm playing, and I'm playing wherever I'm given a chance. The rest is your job," Shami said during a press conference.

Shami was once against overlooked by the selectors, this time for the T20I series against New Zealand, which was the return of Bhuvneshwar Kumar into the side after a gap of four years.

On being asked about his omission, Shami made it clear that he had no interest in off-field politics.

"I have stopped making such comments. It makes no difference to me. Now, whoever wants to do whatever, let them. My job is just to play," he added.

Shami, however, said that he is motivated to keep going until he decides to quit himself.

He also backed the selection of fellow pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar for the T20I series against New Zealand, adding that the veteran's recall would motivate others to keep going.

"A person should keep going on hope alone," Shami reflected. "Look at the skill he has. It's not as if he hasn't been talking to anyone or anything like that. That doesn't mean you should keep a talent out for a long time. I'm happy for him because this has come after such a long time. He has also delivered performances consistently in the IPL. If someone is working hard, showing their skill and has the potential, why shouldn't they be playing? Everyone deserves a chance to perform."
