Gnarls Barkley Clarify That Upcoming Reunion Tour Will Only Feature Danger Mouse ‘In Spirit’

A week after announcing their first tour in 18 years, Gnarls Barkley has issued a clarification about which members will be hitting the road. Initially pitched as a nine-city North American celebrating the reunion of singer CeeLo Green and producer Danger Mouse (born Brian Burton), the pair have now clarified that the To Whom It Still Concerns tour will feature just Green.

We want no misunderstandings / disappointments etc.,” read a note from the group on its Instagram on Wednesday (Sept. 23). “He is my Producer(a great one at that) ! not a performing artist .we are business partners,Whatever he decides for himself is his right…and I support him (vice versa) this is a disclaimer. #respectfully. The original tour poster featured both men as cartoon images standing in a desert under a giant peach, while the amended announcement now features a note that reads, “Danger Mouse will not be appearing on the upcoming To Whom It Still Concerns tour”; promoter Live Nation also changed the tour’s poster to read “CeeLo Green Performing Gnarls Barkley.” The nine-city outing is slated to kick off on Nov. 5 with a show at the Masonic in San Francisco, before moving on to Los Angeles, Atlanta, Detroit, Boston, Silver Spring, Md., Toronto and New York before wrapping up on Nov. 28 at the House of Blues in Chicago. Green has also booked four Gnarls Barkley shows in the U.K. in December.

The Grammy-winning dynamic duo broke an 18-year hiatus in February when they announced the release date for what they said was their third and final album, Atlanta, which dropped in March. The album was the long-awaited follow-up to the duo’s 2008 sophomore LP, The Odd Couple, which spun off the Billboard Hot 100 No. 88 charting single “Going On.” The pair’s Grammy-nominated, multiplatinum debut album, 2006’s St. Elsewhere, included the enduring hit “Crazy,” which ran up to No. 2 on the Hot 100 in May 2006 while topping the U.K. charts for nine weeks.

Gnarls Barkley has toured sporadically in the past, including appearing at awards shows and playing festivals in 2006 to support their debut, as well as international shows in 2007 and gigs that year opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the U.S. They also played some festival dates and sporadic shows in 2008 to support Odd Couple, with both men on stage, often in elaborate costumes, including dressing as characters from The Wizard of Oz at Coachella in 2006 and as characters from the films A Clockwork Orange and Wayne’s World during other performances.
