HKFP launches HongKongWeather.com – the city’s best, clearest weather platform

HKFP has launched a new weather platform for the city. WeatherHongKong.com relies on dozens of official, live data feeds provided by the Observatory, Environmental Protection Department and other reputable sources.

However, it presents data in a clearer format and combines information in real time to provide new data points.

For instance, temperature, wind and humidity data are combined to provide a “feels like” reading, since the thermometer alone isn’t always the best source for understanding what it’s like outside.

Live recommendations for hikers, swimmers and beachgoers are included, in addition to live webcam views of the city.

Further down the page, as well as detailing sunrise, sunset and moon phases, photographers can see when “Golden Hour” or “Blue Hour” are set to happen each day. There is also a Chinese calendar for those keeping track of the lunar year.

Visitors can also compare weather records for the day, as well as judge the risk of indoor mould. We’re also including the wet-bulb globe temperature, which – amid much debate – is considered a decent indicator of heat stress for those venturing outdoors.

During typhoon signals, storm data and tracking are made more prominent.

Meanwhile, for a bit of fun, there’s a Li Ka-shing Shield tracker to monitor whether the city’s richest man is set to keep us all at the office during the next typhoon.

And look out for our long-suffering deer mascot, as they react to the current conditions.

Each data box is draggable and can be rearranged however you prefer.

Designing a better weather platform

WeatherHongKong.com was initially coded with AI assistance under HKFP’s AI guidelines. Since it relies on official government data, it will remain as accurate and speedy as the Observatory’s own platforms.

The platform is ad-free and free of charge, thanks to HKFP members – our monthly/yearly supporters.

In fact, the entire project was a result of an HKFP donor getting in touch last month to suggest we build a “real feel” temperature feature…
