Taylor Swift Announces New Song "Patient Zero" After Teasing Easter Eggs

Drop everything now—Taylor Swift has another surprise for fans. 

Just one day after the “Opalite” singer revealed her brand-new single “Patient Zero,” out Friday, Sept. 25, she announced The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, featuring four new songs, will drop the same day.

"About a year ago, you guys did a truly unfathomable thing," Swift wrote on Instagram Sept. 23. "Something that completely blew my mind… You gave The Life of a Showgirl the biggest first week for an album in history."

To celebrate, Swift took a trip to Sweden to reconnect with Showgirl collaborators Max Martin and Shellback.

"Really we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in," she noted, "but there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs."

"I hope you love them, because they were born out of pure gratitude for your exuberance for and celebration of the album we made," Swift concluded. "The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore including four new songs is out on Friday and available to pre-order and save now."

On Sept. 22, Swift—who wed Travis Kelce in July—revealed the imminent arrival and visuals for the upcoming single, writing on Instagram, “I’ve been impatiently waiting to tell you that my brand new single ‘Patient Zero’ will be out on September 25.”

And the dominoes have continued to cascade in a line for the Grammy winner. Her big announcement comes after she dropped a plethora of Easter eggs online and during an appearance in an Emmys 2026 skit, where she dropped a phrase that has echoed through her fans’ vernacular ever since: “Saccharide, Ares, From the Vineyard, North or South.”

“Those words will all make sense to us soon,” one fan posited on X after the skit aired Sept. 14. “And it will have been hiding in plain sight!! She’s so sneaky!”

Swift’s latest musical era—save for the Toy Story 5 collaboration “I Knew It, I Knew You”—comes less than a year after the release of The Life of a Showgirl, which Swift described as “a focused album” that felt like “capturing lightning in a bottle.”

Working exclusively with producers Max Martin and Shellback, Swift said she challenged herself to write a concise, upbeat album following the lengthy The Tortured Poets Department anthology released in 2024. 

“There’s no other songs coming,” Swift explained during an August 2025 appearance on New Heights. “With Tortured Poets Department, I was like, ‘Here’s a data dump of everything I’ve thought, felt, experienced in two or three years. Here’s 31 songs.’ This is 12. There’s not a 13^th. There are not other ones coming.”

Nodding to the “infectiously joyful” vibe of Showgirl, Swift mused, “This is the kind of record I’ve been wanting to make for a very long time.”

But even though Swift’s humor and lightheartedness undoubtedly shined through on her latest record, she more recently shut down that her artistry can sit cleanly in any one box. 

“When it comes to writing different shades of my music, you can say the same thing many different ways,” Swift noted during a panel with the Grammy Museum shared in August. “The way that I’ve chosen to express myself as a lyricist has changed over the years and there are times when those contradictions will come up when fans will be like, ‘I can’t believe the same person who wrote this, wrote this’—because one will be very simplistic and silly and one will be very detailed and deep.”

As Swift put of the wide variety of her work, “I think that playful contradiction is fun.”
