Israeli man caught speeding on Highway 90 at 217 kph under the influence of drugs

A 25-year-old Eilat resident was arrested on Tuesday evening on Highway 90 in Israel's south after he was caught driving at 217 kph (135 mph) in a zone where the speed limit was 90 kph (56 mph).

Regardless of where the was, he would have been driving far above the speed limit; the fastest legal speed limit in Israel is 120 kph (75 mph), permitted on Highway 6.

Eilat police officers stopped the driver and brought him in for questioning, at which point they began to suspect he was under the influence of drugs - a suspicion they later confirmed, according to their Wednesday morning statement on the matter.

Man charged with speeding, driving under the influence, and reckless driving

Following a brief investigation, they filed an expedited indictment against the driver, charging him with speeding, driving under the influence of drugs, and reckless driving. They also requested that he remain in custody until the end of the proceedings.

The man's car was towed from the scene to be impounded for 30 days, and his license was suspended for 30 days as well.
