Jamie Smith ruled out of Surrey's fight for Championship survival

Smith suffered a dislocation of the digit after lunch on day two at Edgbaston, while keeping up to stumps to Ollie Robinson. It was also discovered through subsequent scans that he has cracked his thumb, but Cricinfo understands that he will not be undergoing any further treatment other than rest.
Though he was later able to bat in his usual No.7 spot, scoring 69, he was ruled out of taking the field. Jordan Cox took the gloves for Pakistan's second innings and Smith was not required to bat in England's successful chase of 130 on day four.
Surrey had hoped Smith would be available for their final two County Championship matches, starting with fellow relegation strugglers Glamorgan at the Kia Oval on Tuesday. The club are sitting relatively comfortably among their lower-table rivals; currently sixth in Division One, 21 points outside the relegation zone.
Cricinfo also understands that Surrey will escape a charge for the pitch at the Kia Oval during their vital one-wicket, three-day win against Yorkshire at the start of September. Described as a "roulette-wheeler" by players because of its unpredictability, the surface was challenging throughout, with day two featuring parts of all four innings as 23 wickets fell.
Under current ECB regulations, teams can lose all the points awarded for a match if a pitch is rated "below average of worse". That could have meant Surrey losing all 19 points garnered from the fixture.
That is the fate currently looming over Leicestershire, who were charged by The Cricket Regulator for the surface produced for their home fixture against Glamorgan last month. They also took 19 points from the match which has kept them within touching distance of safety.
