Huge Marvel Retcon Crowns Its Most Powerful Hero, With No Room For Doubt

One classic character just made a pretty definitive case for their status as the strongest superhero in Marvel canon, bar none. How? Well, an A-list hero is nothing without an A-list villain, which means determining the most powerful Marvel hero isn't going to mean anything unless it comes as a result of proving themselves superior against the most powerful Marvel villain of all time. Thankfully, the character who tops that latter list is pretty clearcut. It is Doctor Doom by a wide margin.

Doom operates on a completely different level than any other villain, and almost every hero as well. If he were an athlete, he'd be one of those players who people say plays like he "came down from a higher league." He's the Jordan of supervillains. The Gretzky. The Brady. Etc. Even when he's beaten, he's never really beaten. (Except that time Ant-Man actually gave Doom the beating of a lifetime, but Doom would prefer we not dwell on that.)

But it turns out Doom has one opponent that can not only defeat him, but also let Doom win at the same time. That is his mystical nemesis Doctor Strange, who just made the true scope of his magical and intellectual dominance over the Marvel Universe clear in a hero vs. villain showdown unlike anything else Marvel has delivered in years.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Doctor Doom and Doctor Strange's thrilling new showdown!

The Latest Round Of "Doctor Strange Vs. Doctor Doom" Proves Who Marvel's Most Powerful Hero Really Is

Challenges of Doom, Doom sets the parameters of his duel with Doctor Strange

The Challenges of Doom: Doctor Strange #1 one-shot is a mesmerizing battle between the Marvel Universe's two most powerful characters. Doom and Strange are literally playing five-dimensional chess here, while the rest of Marvel's heroes and villains are playing checkers. Or maybe even just Jenga. Their "magical duel," as Doom lays out to Strange at the onset of their encounter, "will take the form of a conversation," which "will take the form of a game," and "the game will take the form of two lifetimes." Ready for that wild ride?

Question 1 of 3

You should be. The tense tête-à-tête is dialogue driven, and steeped in the dense lore the two characters share together, but while Doom and Strange are sitting across a chess board from each other in a dark room in the "present" of the story, their moves reverberate throughout space and time and different Marvel realities. Each move has cosmic repercussions, and the art from Christian Rosado follows these reverberations across the past, present, and future of Marvel.

It really is something to behold. The centerpiece of it all, though, is the truly remarkable back-and-forth between Strange and Doom, which starts even before their game is officially underway. Doom offers Strange a drink, acts offended when Strange declines, and then lets himself be mollified by Strange's eloquent explanation that taking the drink would've been an even greater insult, because to duel Doom at less than 100% mental capacity would be unacceptable. As it turns out, this exchange is a sly preview of how the rest of the game plays out.

Doom And Strange Have Been Moving Pieces On Marvel's Canon Chessboard For Lifetimes

Challenges of Doom, Strange and Doom engage in a battle of wits as soon as they are face to face

It is a pleasure watching Doctor Strange "outwit, outlast, and outplay" Doom at every turn in this issue, to borrow the classic tagline from Survivor. More than any depiction of heroes trading brute force blows on the page, this is a true heavyweight battle, fought with words, and looks, and ideas, as much as with magic. And in the end, it is a fist-pumping moment when Doctor Strange comes out on top. After which Doom fully recognizes him as an equal, all but crowning Strange as Marvel's true most powerful hero.

At the start of the contest, Doom proposes that it is "to the death." Without giving it all away, Strange manages to maneuver the game into an ostensible stalemate, but one from which Doom can walk away claiming victory. Ironically, this ultimately makes it a win for Doctor Strange, who negates the consequences of an actual Doom win, and also finds a way to help Doom take a step or two forward on his trajectory from villain to anti-hero.

Challenges of Doom final page, Doom challenges Strange to another game

In fact, Challenges of Doom: Doctor Strange makes it clear that the "present" of the issue is in Marvel's past, and that the two have been writing years worth of their own canon ahead of time with their game. In the end, the issue leaves Doctor Doom and Doctor Strange on mostly even footing, with Doom even challenging his foe to "another game?" But the real winner is clear, as Marvel crowns its most powerful hero.

Challenges of Doom: Doctor Strange #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
