GenSan suspends classes, gov’t work after magnitude 6.4 earthquake

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato — The city government of neighboring General Santos suspended classes at all levels and work in government offices on Thursday following a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that struck off Davao Occidental and was felt across parts of Mindanao.
In a public advisory posted on their official social media page ‘LGU Gensan: Tatak Heneral’, the city government said the suspension of government work would allow authorities to conduct structural inspections and safety assessments of public buildings following the earthquake.
Classes in all public and private schools were also suspended until further notice.

The city government advised residents to remain calm, stay alert for possible aftershocks and follow official advisories.
A formal memorandum on the suspension is expected to follow.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake struck at 4:07 p.m., with its epicenter located 42 kilometers south of Balut Island in the municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental.
The quake had a depth of 10 kilometers.
Based on Phivolcs’ initial bulletin, General Santos City recorded instrumental Intensity IV, along with Alabel and Malapatan in Sarangani; Tboli and Lake Sebu in South Cotabato; and Palimbang in Sultan Kudarat. INQ
