Metal Gear's Hideo Kojima Likens Current Japan to Nation Just Before World War II
Japanese film news outlet Cinema Today released a joint interview with video game director Hideo Kojima and filmmaker and actor Shinya Tsukamoto on September 10. While discussing current war-themed video games and the state of the world (especially for young people) in the interview, Kojima and Tsukamoto likened the current Japanese political climate to pre-World War II Japan.
Kojima began by saying, “So many wars are breaking out. It looks like Japan might get pulled into a war too, and there's no one speaking out against it. The world is slowly being damaged. It floods when it rains, and there are so many earthquakes, too. It's terrible.”
Tsukamoto responded, “There are many adults intent on creating the environment for war.”
Kojima continued, “It's like [pre-WWII] Japan. During desperate times, what people with the reins of power do is go to war.”

Kojima is best known for creating the Metal Gear video game series. The video game director then created the critically acclaimed 2019 game Death Stranding. Physint, an upcoming game from Kojima and his production company Kojima Productions, recently changed publishers from Sony Interactive Entertainment to Xbox Game Studios. Kojima Productions released a statement following speculation that the change in publisher came amid concerns of “budget, potential profitability and exclusivity.”
Tsukamoto is best known as the director of the Tetsuo film series. The filmmaker has also appeared in Ichi the Killer as Jijii, Sexy Voice and Robo as Takeo Hayashi, Shin Godzilla as Kunio Hazama, and Shin Kamen Rider as Hiroshi Midorikawa. Tsukamoto has also lent his voice to Kojima's Metal Gear Solid series as Vamp in Metal Gear Solid 4.
