John Dutton III's return to the Yellowstone universe gets a new status report.

A year and a half since Yellowstone ended on Paramount Network and Taylor Sheridan has already found a way to revive the neo-Western franchise through a couple of sequels. Beth and Rip start a new life in Texas with Carter in Dutton Ranch, which streams on Paramount+, while Kayce's Marshals lives on CBS. Both shows have already found their respective audience, but Luke Grimes' new procedural edges its counterpart in terms of already returning for its sophomore year.

Coming back as a major player in CBS's fall 2026 lineup, Marshals season 2 kicked things off with the rescue of Tate and the re-establishment of its titular team. Even as the show's story diversifies, however, Kayce remains at the heart of it, and as with Beth, the legacy of the Duttons impacts his present and future life. With that comes questions about whether Costner might be able to show up in the series as John III through a flashback or vision.

In a new interview with USA Today, Grimes addressed the matter, revealing that he hasn't spoken with his former co-star ever since they stopped working. He was quick to clarify, however, that it is simply because both of them are very busy. While he would be happy to have Costner in Marshals, he pointed out that it would be more important to the series' story if it's Monica who appears in a flashback. Read his full quote below:

Never spoken to Kevin since we stopped working together. Not for any other reason other than just you know, we're both busy guys and life moves on. But I mean, it would be cool. I doubt that will happen at this point. I just don't know. I think if there was a flashback, I'd probably rather it be with Monica than John. I think that'd be more poignant to the character, but we'll see. So far, no conversation, but I sure would love it working with her.

Luke Grimes and Kevin Costner as Kayce and John Dutton in Yellowstone

For context, what started as an inspired collaboration between Sheridan and Costner ended in a controversial way, when they had a falling out towards the end of Yellowstone's run. The actor's abrupt exit from the neo-Western series resulted in his character being killed and the show wrapping up, even though it was still very popular. Costner has yet to reunite with any of his old co-stars after his abrupt exit from the world that he helped build.

It's only natural to ask about the possibility of seeing him again despite his death. John III may have been killed, but his legacy looms large over both Kayce and Beth's respective lives. In fact, being a Dutton gives people some pre-determined notion of what they are like — some of them wrong and others right. That said, Grimes is right. As great as it would be to see Costner reprise his Yellowstone role again, it would make more sense for Marshals to have Monica instead. This doesn't mean, however, that the new show can't incorporate the Dutton patriarch into its storytelling, especially considering the controversial manner of his death.

Right now, there are no plans to bring either John III or Monica back in Marshals. Instead, the CBS series is focused on establishing its own identity that is separated from Yellowstone. For what it's worth, considering its ratings, there's no urgent need to make massive changes to the project, as fans seem to love it just the way it is.
