Anambra billionaire, Rev Sister released after 10 days in captivity

Awka—Anambra businessman and Managing Director of JEZCO Oil, Chief Joseph Ezeokafor, and a Reverend Sister whose identity was not disclosed have been released after spending 10 days in the custody of their abductors.

The victims were abducted in the Ifite area of Awka, Anambra State.

The Anambra State Police Command said the two victims were picked up by a family member at a location near the Anambra-Enugu boundary following their release.

The command said security agencies were taking steps to establish the circumstances surrounding their release and obtain information that could assist ongoing investigations.

In a statement on Saturday, the command said: “The Anambra State Police Command confirms that, today, 15th August 2026, Chief J. J. Ezeokafor and a Rev. Sister, who were earlier abducted by armed criminals at Ifite-Awka, have been released and have safely returned.

“The command is currently taking necessary steps to establish the circumstances surrounding their release and obtain relevant information that will assist ongoing investigations and identification of the perpetrators.

“The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, while commending the safe return of the victims, further directs intensified intelligence-led operations and manhunt for those responsible for the abduction.”

According to the command, the ongoing operation involves the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Agunechemba security operatives and other relevant security agencies.

The command appreciated members of the public for their support and cooperation, urging them to remain vigilant and provide credible and timely information that could assist security agencies in apprehending the perpetrators.

It was not immediately clear whether ransom was paid to secure the victims’ release, particularly as the abductors had reportedly demanded N1.5 billion from the businessman’s family.
