URIIS 2026 brings university research closer to market

From the internet and webcams to artificial hearts and mRNA vaccines, university research has helped shape technologies that have changed how people live.

But taking a discovery from the laboratory to the market requires more than a promising idea. It needs funding, industry expertise and a clear understanding of the market it is intended to serve.

The University Research and Innovation Investment Summit (URIIS) 2026 aims to bridge the gap by bringing together all 20 public universities, investors and businesses to explore how Malaysian research can be translated into market-ready solutions.

Jointly organised by the higher education ministry and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), the summit will take place from Sept 21-23 at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur and highlight more than 200 technologies with investment potential.

For researchers, it offers a chance to take their work beyond academic circles, while businesses and investors can explore technologies and partnerships that could meet their needs.

Making research ready for investment

For research to attract investment, potential investors need to understand the problem it solves, the demand for it and whether it can be produced or delivered at a scale that makes commercial sense.

Meanwhile, industry partners can also help researchers understand practical requirements, from production costs and regulatory considerations to how a solution would fit into existing operations.

URIIS aims to create space for these conversations, connecting research teams with investors and industry players who can assess their ideas, provide market feedback and identify possible pathways towards commercialisation.

Its scheduled programme includes pitching arenas for investment and commercialisation, alongside dedicated sessions for research and industry feedback.

A Cradle grant pitching clinic, an intellectual property commercialisation masterclass by Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology and Innovation (MRANTI), and market-readiness sessions are also scheduled to help participants prepare for that journey.

Opportunities across 12 niche clusters

The summit covers 12 niche clusters, reflecting opportunities across technology, healthcare, energy, food security, and other areas with commercial and societal potential.

These include semiconductors, nanotechnology and advanced materials; digital finance and business technology; agricultural technology and food biotechnology; and life sciences, health technology and pharmaceuticals.

Other areas span sustainable energy, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence and robotics, alongside halal technology, education, smart cities, defence, aerospace and transportation.

The summit will also explore biodiversity, ecotourism, indigenous knowledge and national heritage, highlighting the broader economic and societal potential of Malaysian research.

Turning challenges into opportunities

The programme links research and innovation to real-world challenges, including early health monitoring for an ageing population, poultry health and predictive maintenance in industry.

For universities, stronger industry relationships can open opportunities for technology transfer, collaborative research, commercialisation and new sources of funding.

Companies, in turn, can gain access to emerging technologies and talent, potentially helping them improve productivity or develop new products and services.

Successful commercialisation could also support the creation of new businesses, skilled jobs and export opportunities, giving Malaysia greater economic and societal returns from its research capabilities.
