Police, Villages Ministry join forces to improve rural security

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian National Police (Polri) and the Ministry of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions have agreed to roll out joint initiatives aimed at strengthening public order and security in rural areas.

Polri Chief General Suyudi Ario Seto forged the collaboration during a meeting with Minister of Villages Yandri Susanto at the police headquarters in Jakarta on Friday.

The police chief expressed concern over drug abuse and alcohol consumption in villages, saying they have contributed to various crimes, including theft, violence, brawls, illegal street racing, and inter-village clashes.

"In fact, we often see children being perpetrators of violent acts," he added.

To address the issue, Suyudi said Polri and the ministry would work together to intensify public awareness campaigns on the dangers of narcotics and alcoholic beverages in villages.

The effort will include strengthening the Anti-Drugs Curriculum Integration (IKAN) program, which he introduced during his tenure as head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN).

Suyudi explained that the program was designed to raise children's awareness of the dangers of drug abuse and its legal consequences, encouraging them to stay away from and reject narcotics.

"We hope to expand and strengthen public awareness campaigns through the IKAN program so that it can reach all provinces across Indonesia," the general added.

He also highlighted plans to align the Drug-Free Village (Bersinar) program with Polri's ongoing initiative to reduce unemployment as part of efforts to maintain security and order in villages.

Minister Susanto echoed the concerns, confirming that the threats of drug abuse and alcohol consumption are also evident in villages, beyond urban areas.

With that in mind, he said the ministry would work with the police to implement the Bersinar program in 75,266 villages nationwide to shield rural residents from narcotics.
