Indonesia prepares Bali for second-stage financial center development

Badung, Bali (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is preparing Bali to become the site for the second stage of financial center development after Jakarta, as part of efforts to boost Indonesia's appeal for financial sector activities amid global uncertainty.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto conveyed the plan during the International Forum for Government Credit Programs in Badung District, Bali, on Thursday.
Airlangga said the government has discussed Bali's potential with state-owned enterprises (SOEs), adding that regulatory aspects for developing the financial center have been addressed and are currently being finalized.
"Yesterday with SOEs, we also looked into Bali's potential to become a financial center, where the regulations have been drafted and are now in the finalization stage," Airlangga said.
He explained that the financial center development is planned to take place in stages: Jakarta is being prepared as the first stage, while Bali is being considered for the next.
Airlangga noted that a financial center is relevant amid global economic uncertainty. Indonesia, he added, has an opportunity to attract financial sector activities, supported by a safe and comfortable environment.
He explained that developing a financial center in Bali also aligns with efforts to broaden the drivers of economic growth in the province, which has largely relied on tourism.
In his speech, the minister mentioned that the government has prepared several economic development initiatives in Bali, including the Sanur Health Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and the Kura-Kura Bali SEZ.
The Sanur SEZ is aimed at developing international-standard health services while attracting visitors seeking healthcare services. Meanwhile, the Kura-Kura Bali SEZ is being developed to support economic activities and draw investment.
Airlangga also pointed to the potential of the digital economy and regional talent development to expand Bali's economic activities.
He emphasized that diversification is crucial so that Bali's economic growth does not rely solely on tourism, but can also thrive through the finance, healthcare, education, and digital economy sectors.
Meanwhile, Bali Governor Wayan Koster welcomed the government's plan, stating that Bali is a highly strategic region to realize the project.
