Gibran discusses EV innovation, technology with Asian EV pioneer

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka hosted Ching-Chuen Chan at his official residence in Jakarta on Wednesday (Oct. 28) to discuss how the country can strengthen its position in electric vehicle (EV) supply chains.
Chan, an Indonesian-born Chinese electrical engineer and academic, is widely known as the "Father of Electric Vehicles in Asia."
Gibran discussed building an ecosystem that supports research and innovation, government backing for the EV industry and the younger generation's role in advancing the nation's technological self-reliance, according to a statement cited on Thursday.
He stressed the importance of leveraging Indonesia's abundant resources through innovation to move beyond being merely a technology user and become a technology developer.
"While we possess all the resources needed, we are still at a very early stage when it comes to innovation," the vice president said in the statement.
He also told Chan that the government is working to make EV manufacturing one of its priority sectors, in line with directives from President Prabowo Subianto.
"The president is now focusing on electric motorcycles, with the industry evidently showing progress. Now, the question is what kind of incentives we need to offer consumers," Gibran said.
Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Stella Christie also attended the discussion, stressing the need to adjust curricula and align competency certification with industry needs to develop human resources for the EV industry.
"Equally crucial is that we pay greater attention to our capacity to develop our own technology," she said.
Meanwhile, Chan urged closer collaboration between Indonesia and China to support EV development, facilitate exchanges of expertise and encourage young Indonesians to innovate in the industry.
He also stressed the importance of technological self-reliance, saying Indonesia needed to master and develop its own technologies through research and innovation to acquire the tools needed to excel in the EV sector.
