MCMC steps in to address WhatsApp account fraud in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is looking into public complaints regarding WhatsApp accounts that have reportedly been compromised, blocked, or rendered inaccessible.

In a statement today, MCMC announced that it has referred the matter to Meta to seek clarification and appropriate action.

“MCMC will continue to monitor the situation and seek cooperation from the platform to protect user interests.

“Affected users are advised to use official WhatsApp channels for account recovery or verification,” the statement read.

According to MCMC, account compromised and account blocking are two distinct issues.

“Accounts compromised by irresponsible parties can be misused for fraud, spam, or activities that violate WhatsApp’s terms, subsequently leading to the account being blocked by the platform,” MCMC said.

The Commission also advised the public not to share verification codes or security PINs, to activate the ‘Two-Step Verification’ feature, and to avoid suspicious links or applications.

MCMC reminded the public to be wary of parties offering account recovery services that request money, personal information, or verification codes.

“If the issue cannot be resolved through official WhatsApp channels, users may submit a complaint to MCMC for further action and for the case to be referred to Meta,” the commission added. — Bernama
