Chinese motorcycle founder sets world record for 40 km ride on water

Chinese motorcycle manufacturer ZXMOTO founder Zhang Xue rode 40.74 km across open water on a modified motorcycle, breaking the previous Guinness World Record of 31.8 km.
Zhang, 39, set the record on Oct. 25 in his hometown of Mayang Miao autonomous county, Huaihua, Hunan Province, central China.
He rode a modified MX450 motorcycle along a river course, covering 40.74 kilometers to set a record for the longest distance traveled over open water on a modified motorcycle, CGTN reported.
The attempt began with rescue boats and medical teams on standby. Guinness World Records officials reviewed GPS tracking, timing data and audiovisual evidence to verify the result.
The motorcycle was fitted with flotation devices and waterproofing measures. Despite challenging turns and physical fatigue, Zhang completed six laps and crossed the finish line. Guinness adjudicator Xiong Wen confirmed the record at the scene, China Daily reported.
The achievement came 17 years after Zhang first attempted to ride a motorcycle on water at age 22. With the technology and designs available at the time, he failed in all four attempts, with his longest run covering just 20 meters.
For the latest attempt, Zhang's team spent five months improving the motorcycle's buoyancy, waterproof seals and power system. They conducted repeated water tests to address stability problems.
"I believed I could make it happen. Even if I failed, I would keep pursuing it without hesitation. I really enjoy the process," Zhang said, according to the Global Times.
Zhang said staging the record attempt in his hometown made the achievement more meaningful. He wanted to bring the challenge home, fulfill a personal dream and show the world what Mayang had to offer.
