Indonesian MP urges sustained action after Jakarta drug raid

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Adang Daradjatun, a member of Commission III of Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR RI), said a police raid on Kampung Bahari, North Jakarta, demonstrated the government's commitment to protecting residents from drugs.

He said illicit drug trafficking remained a serious threat to the public, particularly young people, and urged authorities to make the fight against drugs a sustained commitment.

"The war on drugs is not a one-off operation but a long-term struggle requiring consistency from law enforcement agencies and public support," Adang said in Jakarta on Sunday.

He said the operation, involving the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), National Police Criminal Investigation Agency, Jakarta Metropolitan Police, and Mobile Brigade Corps, highlighted the need for interagency cooperation against organized drug crime.

Drug-network raids were difficult, he said, because officers faced various forms of resistance. He urged police to act courageously, professionally, and decisively to prevent traffickers from gaining the upper hand.

Adang said successful raids must be followed by comprehensive law enforcement, with arrests serving as a starting point for exposing larger networks, including dealers, suppliers, operators, and those suspected of protecting them.

"Tracing the flow of criminal proceeds is also essential to prevent drug networks from rebuilding their illegal businesses," he said.

He said tackling drug-prone areas such as Kampung Bahari required a comprehensive approach combining law enforcement with prevention, rehabilitation, community empowerment, and social recovery.

Adang urged authorities to treat local residents as strategic partners in breaking the drug trade's chain rather than viewing them as part of the problem.

"People who simply want to live safely and free from drugs must not become victims or face pressure from trafficking networks," he said.

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police said earlier that officers arrested 27 people suspected of involvement in a drug trafficking network and seized firearms during Sunday's raid in Kampung Bahari, North Jakarta.

Jakarta Metropolitan Police Narcotics Directorate Chief Bismo Teguh Prakoso said the raid was conducted simultaneously by a joint task force.

"We raided the area from several directions simultaneously and coordinated with all parties, including BNN, the National Police Criminal Investigation Agency, Jakarta Metropolitan Police, and Mobile Brigade Corps," Bismo said.
