Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Foreign Ministry urged Indonesian citizens in France and Italy to remain alert after demonstrations in both countries on Saturday, October 17.

Heni Hamidah, the Foreign Ministry's director for citizen protection, said in a statement here Monday that the Indonesian embassies in Paris and Rome had urged Indonesians in their jurisdictions to exercise caution and monitor security developments.

The ministry also urged Indonesians in both countries to follow official updates from local authorities and avoid demonstration sites and crowds.

Indonesians were advised to adjust travel plans for possible public transportation disruptions and follow instructions from local security authorities.

The embassies in Paris and Rome will continue monitoring security developments and maintaining contact with Indonesian citizens.

In emergencies, Indonesians in France and Italy can call the embassy in Paris at +33-6-2112-2109 or the embassy in Rome at +39-338-954-2333.

In France, nearly 2,400 people were detained and about 1,000 police and gendarmes were injured during Saturday's unrest, according to the Interior Ministry.

Demonstrators across France protested rising living costs and prices of basic goods, with the rallies marred by clashes with police, rioting, looting and vandalism.

In Milan, Italy, fresh unrest erupted on Sunday, a day after clashes broke out in the city center during protests against rising living costs.
