Three Orlando Pirates players could help win the MTN8 final

Orlando Pirates’ spine of goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, central midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi and the centre forward Yanela Mbuthuma face defining roles in the final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium at 18:00.
The trio form three crucial pillars of a team chasing cup glory. Chaine must not only deal with shots at goal, he has to organise the back four in defence.
Mokobodi, in the middle, has to create play against one of Africa’s best midfielders Teboho Mokoena. Mbuthuma‘s relentless work rate has to put pressure on the Sundowns defence to open up for the Buccaneers’ attacking players.
SIPHO CHAINE MUST KEEP ORLANDO PIRATES SOLID
Chaine has been one of the team’s most reliable performers for three seasons. The Bloemfontein-born star goalkeeper has recorded an impressive 91.7% save percentage, making 11 saves across 5 local matches. He has also kept 4 clean sheets and conceded just 1 goal.
The goalkeeper has recorded an 83.6% pass completion rate, completing 1,011 passes from deep positions. His performances have earned him an average match rating of 7.44.
Chaine’s reflexes could prove crucial against the likes of Tashreeq Matthews and Brayan Leon.
THAPELO MOKOBODI AND YANELA MBUTHUMA HAVE KEY ROLES
Mokobodi is simply the heartbeat of Orlando Pirates midfield with a dual role of attacking, defending and tactical plan created by the assistant coach like Rayan Jacobs on the bench. The 23-year-old has made an impressive start, recording 91% passing accuracy on his debut after completing 58 of his 64 passes. His defensive contribution has also been important, with statistics showing 3 tackles, 4 interceptions and 3 recoveries per match.
His ability to win possession and distribute the ball effectively could help Orlando Pirates control the midfield and prevent Sundowns from launching dangerous counter-attacks.
Meanwhile, Mbuthuma will carry responsibility in the final third. The young striker has responded to early-season criticism by scoring 2 goals in 6 league appearances.
Mbuthuma has also created 11 chances, the most among Orlando Pirates players, while drawing pressure from defenders and winning 4 fouls. Goalscoring opportunities and attacking space for the likes of Oswin Appollis and Tshepang Moremi often come through Mbuthuma’s labour.
His physical presence, pressing and movement could cause problems for the Sundowns defence. His recent senior Bafana Bafana call-up has further highlighted his progress.
