‘Spider-Noir’ Canceled After One Season As Prime Video Eyes Greenlight For Another Series Based On Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters

Prime Video has opted not to proceed with a second season of the comic book-based series Spider-Noir starring Nicholas Cage.

Spider-Noir was the second series ordered and first to make it to the screen under a multi-title deal between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television based on IP from Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel Characters. (The first, Spider-Man spinoff Silk, was ultimately scrapped.)

Amazon was expected to wait and see how Spider-Noir does before making a decision on other shows. While the Nicholas Cage vehicle will not be continuing, the Amazon-Sony TV collaboration it was part of will. The two sides are carrying on with development of multiple projects, with one of them said to be nearing a series order. All shows under the deal have a linear debut on Amazon’s MGM+ platform followed by a streaming release on sibling Prime Video.

Spider-Noir fared well with both reviewers and viewers, earning a 92% critics score and 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and landing 11 Emmy Award nominations — the most of any Prime Video series in 2026.

The pull of recognizable IP and Oscar winner Cage in his first TV role helped Spider-Noir to a solid launch at No.2 on Nielsen’s U.S Top 10 for original series for its first week, bringing in 851 million minutes viewed. (The show premiered May 25 on MGM+’s linear channel and May 27 globally on Prime Video.) Over its first six weeks, the comedy-drama generated 2.6 billion viewing minutes in the U.S., according to Nielsen Streaming Content Ratings.

But Spider-Noir didn’t have the staying power of other Prime Video recent releases such as Off Campus, Reacher and Ride Or Die, dropping off the platform’s daily Top 10 rankings relatively quickly.

The respectable but not outsized viewership was coupled with the high cost for the lavish production, which filmed both color and black & white versions. Since streamers base their renewal decisions primarily on cost vs. performance, the two likely factored into the call not to continue Spider-Noir.

On the bright side, Season 1 told largely a complete story with just a few loose threads left, so fans will not be left hanging too much by the cancellation.

Based on the Marvel comic Spider-Man Noir, the live-action Spider-Noir tells the story of Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage), a seasoned, down-on-his-luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life following a deeply personal tragedy, as the city’s one and only superhero.

Led by Cage, the cast also included Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, with Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson.

Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot servef as co-showrunners and executive producers. Uziel and Lightfoot developed the series with the team behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal. Lord and Miller executive produced for their shingle Lord Miller, along with Aditya Sood and Dan Shear. Amy Pascal also served as an executive producer via Pascal Pictures alongside Cage and Pavlina Hatoupis. Harry Bradbeer directed and executive produced the first two episodes.
