PENAMPANG: A man died while another was severely injured after the car they were travelling in crashed and caught fire at the roundabout along Jalan Bundusan early this morning.

In the 4am incident, the male driver in his 20s was pronounced dead at the scene, while the male passenger of similar age was found unconscious.

Penampang Fire and Rescue Station chief Senior Assistant Fire Superintendent Zeno Tingalan said an emergency call was received at 4.21am, prompting the dispatch of eight personnel and two fire engines to the scene.

He said upon arrival, the fire team found a Proton Persona had crashed and caught fire with two men trapped inside.

"Firefighters executed an operation to extricate both victims using specialised rescue equipment.

"However, the driver was confirmed dead by Health Ministry medical officers, while the unconscious passenger was given preliminary treatment by the Emergency Medical Rescue Services team," he said.

He added that the severely injured passenger was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital I for further treatment, while the deceased was handed over to the police for further action.
