When the 11-plus test went to the dogs | Brief letters

Translate

Philip Allen’s suggestion (Letters, 5 November) that the cat is the odd one out between cat, dog and radio is questionable. It could be any. The dog is the only one that cannot lull you to sleep with lovely sound, the radio doesn’t have four legs and the cat doesn’t require a licence. If we are looking for people who can think originally, this sort of question is pernicious.

Philip Allen’s letter explaining the connection between the dog licence and the 11-plus exam shows exactly what was wrong with the 11-plus intelligence test.

Luca Cesari’s article (Pineapple on pizza is an insult to our great Italian cuisine – and here’s why we secretly love it, 7 November) reminded me of the shock in our Yorkshire village pub when I revealed that I added olive oil to mashed potatoes. People seemed genuinely upset by this, and it hasn’t been discussed since.

I liked the photograph of Pope Leo meeting Bob Dylan at the Vatican in your print edition (Knockin’ on heaven’s door, 5 November). And it seemed appropriate for Dylan to be dressed like a Traitor given that the pope is most definitely a Faithful.

I read, with interest and in agreement, Jon Hughes’s letter about Patrick Stewart’s support for Huddersfield Town (7 November), but must disagree with the headline. Surely the Terriers’ most famous fan was Harold Wilson?
