Tom Petty’s Origins Explored in New 1970s-Era Box Set

A new Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers box set, Origins 1971-1978, is on the way to mark the band’s 50th birthday. Out November 6 via UMe, the 5xLP collection comprehensively documents the incubation and early years of the band around its formation in 1976. One of the discs, No Sleep Til L.A., which compiles rarities spanning from Petty’s Mudcrutch years to the dawn of the Heartbreakers, is also getting a standalone release. That one features seven unreleased songs. A video for one them, “Parade of Loons,” stars Iain Armitage, aka Young Sheldon. Check it out below.

Completing the set are 50th anniversary editions of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and You’re Gonna Get It!—both newly mixed and mastered by longtime producer and engineer Ryan Ulyate—as well as the sessions recording Live from the Record Plant 1977, released in full for the first time, and rarities set The Cut Out Bin. The announcement precedes a Heartbreakers reunion at tonight’s Americana Awards, where Petty and the Heartbreakers will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Chris Stapleton will join original Heartbreakers Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch, and Ron Blair to open the show.

As well as the 5xLP set, the box comes in 4xCD and “uber deluxe” editions, each with an additional Blu-ray and a DVD of the band’s 1978 performance on the BBC’s Old Grey Whistle Test. The vinyl editions come with an 88-page fanzine with liner notes by David Fricke and Bud Scoppa, track-by-track annotations from the band, and various collectibles.
