Finance minister to attend APEC

Minister of Finance Chuang Tsui-yun (莊翠雲) is to attend a meeting of APEC finance ministers in Hong Kong next week, the Ministry of Finance said yesterday. China is this year’s APEC host, with a leaders’ summit scheduled for next month in Shenzhen. Chuang would, “as is customary,” attend the APEC meeting in Hong Kong on Tuesday and Wednesday next week, the ministry said. Minister of Labor Hung Sun-han (洪申翰) traveled to China’s Nanjing last month, also for an APEC event. Taiwan has yet to announce who would attend the leaders’ summit.

WEATHER

Northern Taiwan to see rain

The greater Taipei area and eastern Taiwan should see sporadic showers today, with rainfall potentially intensifying along the north coast and in Yilan County tomorrow, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. Elsewhere, skies would be mainly cloudy to sunny, although afternoon showers are possible in southern mountainous areas. From Friday through Monday, cloudy to sunny weather is forecast for most parts of the nation, while eastern Taiwan and the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島) might see scattered showers, CWA forecaster Wang Pin-hsiang (王品翔) said. Temperatures in southern Taiwan would remain relatively steady throughout the week, with daytime highs of 30°C to 33°C. Nighttime lows would range from 22°C to 25°C. In northern Taiwan, daytime highs today are to hover between 27°C and 29°C before gradually rising from Friday, reaching 30°C or higher over the weekend, he said. Radiative cooling could cause nighttime temperatures to drop below 20°C today and from Friday through Monday.

TRAVEL

Taipei to hold travel fair

Taipei is to host the Taiwan International Travel Fair from Nov. 6 to 9, with discounted early-bird tickets going on sale starting yesterday, the Taiwan Visitors Association said. The exhibition at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center Hall 1 features 1,600 booths representing 123 countries and cities, the association said in a statement. Previously called the Taipei International Travel Fair, the fair has revised its name to “Taiwan” as it enters its 40th year. Japan’s pavilion is hosting a record 252 booths, while tourism authorities from South Korea, the US, Thailand, Malaysia, France and the Czech Republic would take part, it added. Twelve airlines are participating, including first-time exhibitors Etihad Airways and Sun PhuQuoc Airways, while All Nippon Airways would return after several years of absence. Early-bird tickets are on sale today for NT$150 — 25 percent off the regular price of NT$200. Advance tickets would then be sold for NT$180 from tomorrow to Nov. 5.

CRIME

Man’s life sentence upheld

The High Court yesterday upheld a life sentence and lifetime deprivation of civil rights for a man who murdered his ex-girlfriend by stabbing her 19 times in public. The ruling upheld a Shilin District Court verdict that found Su Shih-hsin (宿世新) guilty of homicide. The ruling can be appealed. According to the district court’s verdict, Su had repeatedly injured his ex-girlfriend, surnamed Tsai (蔡), after she ended their relationship, the district court verdict said. On Nov. 25, 2024, he went to her workplace to confront her. After the two argued near a building’s arcade, Su pulled out a switchblade, pushed Tsai against a nearby wall and stabbed her several times in the chest and abdomen, the court found. After stabbing Tsai 19 times in total, Su stabbed himself in the left side of the chest, the verdict said. Tsai died later that evening despite receiving medical treatment, the court said.
