Why DIY SOS has been 'rested' by the BBC and what is replacing it?

It's been a feature of the small screen for the past 27 years, but DIY SOS will not be coming back in 2027, as the BBC has confirmed that it has decided to "rest" the beloved series for at least a year.
The reality programme, which premiered in October 1999, follows host Nick Knowles and his team as they keep an eye on several builds across the UK, with the group chipping in to help homeowners.
The show ran for 11 years in its original format, before it was rebranded DIY SOS The Big Build from 2010 until 2022. The classic format was revived last year, but the BBC has confirmed that it will again be changing tact in 2027.

Contrary to reports, the main series has not been conclusively cancelled, but will instead be 'rested' for a year, with a brand-new spin-off series - under the working title of DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life - set to air instead.
The new spin-off is being produced by South Shore, the same company behind the rebooted version of the original show. It hasn't yet been confirmed if Knowles, or other members of the cast and crew, will return.
In a statement provided to Digital Spy, a spokesperson for the BBC said: "In light of the BBC's savings challenges, we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin-off show instead, from producers South Shore."
"DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life (w/t) will revisit successes from the show's past, and expand the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective way next year," continued the spokesperson, with the broadcaster said to be looking at ways to reduce costs.
The decision to rest the popular series has been criticised by fans, with one writing on X: "'Pausing' the future production of DIY SOS is an appalling decision by the BBC. Shame on them! This decision must be reversed in the times of need!"

"I find it incredibly sad that you will not be running DIY SOS next year. This is one of the best programmes you air these days. Family viewing, making us all feel incredibly grateful for what we have, raising our awareness," wrote another viewer.
"@BBC only reason you still have audience for other shows is because of what @DIYSOS DO. As unlike other shows DIY SOS actually helps people. You made a massive mistake with this & cheap rerun won't work," wrote one fan, while another dubbed it a "bad move".
DIY SOS airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
