Egyptians Abroad Sent $29.7 Billion Home in First Seven Months of 2026

Remittances from Egyptians working abroad rose 28.1 percent year-on-year to around USD 29.7 billion (EGP 1.54 trillion) during the first seven months of 2026, up from approximately USD 23.2 billion (EGP 1.2 trillion) during the same period in 2025, according to a statement by the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) on Monday, 21 September.

Remittances are money sent home by Egyptians living and working abroad and represent an important source of foreign-currency inflows for the country. The CBE has also expanded digital services designed to make receiving remittances through the formal banking system easier.

In July, remittances reached around USD 4.5 billion (EGP 232.6 billion), up 20 percent from approximately USD 3.8 billion (EGP 196.4 billion) in the same month last year. The figure was also higher than the USD 4.2 billion (EGP 217.1 billion) recorded in June 2026, when remittances rose 15.6 percent year-on-year.

The latest figures follow a record year for remittances from Egyptians abroad. In the 2025/2026 financial year, which ended in June, inflows reached around USD 47.3 billion (EGP 2.45 trillion), up 29.6 percent from USD 36.5 billion (EGP 1.89 trillion) in the previous financial year, according to CBE data.

The CBE has previously linked the increase in remittances to the economic reform measures introduced in March 2024, which included moving toward a more flexible exchange-rate regime and measures aimed at addressing foreign-exchange shortages.

Egypt has long been one of the world’s largest recipients of remittances. Inflows have more than doubled over the past decade, rising from USD 17.1 billion (EGP 884 billion) in FY2015/2016 to USD 36.5 billion (EGP 1.89 trillion) in FY2024/2025, after declining in the two preceding financial years.
