James Gunn On Margot Robbie Returning To DCU In ‘The Suicide Squad’ Role: “I Don’t Know If She Wants To Play Harley Again; She May Be Over That”

James Gunn continues building out the DC Universe and recently questioned Margot Robbie‘s involvement as Harley Quinn.
The DC Studios co-head released a podcast titled The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? where he answered fan questions about which characters would transfer to his new universe.
When Robbie’s Harley Quinn came up, Gunn said, “I think Harley is actually one of the more difficult things in this to justify as being canon in the DCU.”
Gunn pointed out that the relationship between Harley and the Joker is very specific, and the Joker hasn’t been established in the DCU yet. The filmmaker reminded viewers that only Batman has been established in his cameo on the animated series Creature Commandos.
Reminiscing about the time he spent directing Margot Robbie in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, Gunn said Robbie “is one of my favorite actors to work with,” adding, “She is so good in the movie. I love her as Harley.”
“I don’t know if she wants to play Harley again. She may be over that,” Gunn said.
Podcast co-host Jennifer Holland pointed out that Robbie has become even a bigger star since filming The Suicide Squad. However, Gunn said Robbie can return as Harley Quinn if she decides to.
“I don’t know where Margot’s head is with all of this,” he said. “Harley is a character I’m almost certainly going to use in the DCU, and if Margot wants to play her, then I’ll bend over backwards to explain that in the world. But if she doesn’t, then I might go with somebody else, where I don’t have to be attached to what happens to Harley in this movie.”
Robbie first played Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad and reprised the role in 2020’s Birds of Prey. When Gunn took over the villainous characters for 2021’s The Suicide Squad, Quinn also returned.
