Anwar turns tears into smiles after child's toy car mishap

Translate

KUALA LUMPUR: A broken toy car brought a young child to tears, but a kind gesture from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim soon turned the situation around.

In a video that has since gone viral on Threads, user @heylyzarashid shared the moment Anwar approached her upset nephew, who was crying after his toy car broke.

Rather than simply offering words of comfort, Anwar handed the youngster RM50 and told him to use it to buy a new toy car.

"Your toy car is broken. Atok will get you another one. Keep this one (the broken toy) and use this (the money) to buy a new one, something nicer and bigger, okay?" he said.

Anwar's wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, was also present during the interaction.

Also in attendance were Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri and her deputy, Lim Hui Ying.

The incident took place during the National Family Month 2026 celebration at the Selangor International Trade Centre yesterday.

In her post, Heylyzarashid wrote: "Keeping this here as a memory. PMX (Anwar) was comforting my nephew, who was crying uncontrollably after his toy car broke. PMX then gave him RM50 and told him to buy a new car."

The gesture appeared to lift the child's spirits, turning an upsetting moment into a memorable encounter.

The video also drew reactions from social media users, with many praising the Prime Minister's spontaneous gesture.

One Threads user commented: "No status or rank, just a grandfather who could not bear to see a young child crying."

Another user wrote: "You must be so proud to have met PMX in person. This will be one of the most meaningful memories for this little one. When you grow up, watch this video again and remember how PMX gave you cash on the spot and told you to buy a new toy car."
