How former Bayern and Real Madrid star Alaba will fit at Udinese

Kosta Runjaic now has a decision to make in his defence. David Alaba’s imminent arrival gives Udinese a player with 130-plus Real Madrid appearances and a Bayern Munich career behind him, but the immediate question is where he slots into a back three that has already had its problems this season.
According to Calciomercato, the Austrian can operate either as the central figure in the three or as the left-sided braccetto. That second role looks the likelier entry point, putting him in direct competition with Enzo Ebosse.
Injuries opened the door for Alaba at Udinese
Udinese’s defensive picture has been unsettled. Oumar Solet and Matteo Palma both went down before the break, forcing Christian Kabasele into the side alongside Abankwah and Ebosse. Both are expected back for the return to action, which gives Runjaic options rather than emergencies, and gives Alaba time to build up.
That matters, because fitness is the obvious caveat. After a strong first season in Madrid, Alaba‘s minutes dwindled steadily amid recurring physical problems. What he did not lose was his place for Austria, starting every match at the World Cup until their last-32 exit.
Udinese resume on Monday 12 October away to Torino. Whether Alaba starts that one is less important than what he offers across a season: a left-footed defender comfortable stepping into midfield, and a dressing-room presence at a club whose defensive record has not matched its ambitions.
