‘Why bring the waste to us?’ – Annoh-Dompreh demands answers over Nsawam plan

The Minority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has demanded an explanation for a reported government plan to move waste from Agbogbloshie to a facility in the Nsawam area.

Speaking in Parliament on Friday, he questioned why the area had been selected when, according to him, a major waste treatment facility already exists at Amasaman.

He urged the Majority Leader to arrange for the minister responsible for local government to appear before the House and explain the policy.

Mr Annoh-Dompreh said he had previously raised the matter with the Majority Leader. He stressed that residents’ concerns must be considered before implementing decisions with potential environmental and public health consequences.

“Why is it that Amasaman has a big waste treatment plant and you jump Amasaman and bring all the waste to his home? Why? What is my wrong?” he asked.

The MP also rejected what he described as attempts to intimidate him for opposing the proposed relocation.

“You cannot intimidate me. You cannot intimidate me,” he declared.

He maintained that he would continue to demand answers on behalf of his constituents.

His intervention follows reported opposition from residents of the affected community, who addressed the media last month over the proposal.

Residents raised concerns about the potential consequences of receiving waste transported from Agbogbloshie.

The Jospong Group of Companies also reportedly intervened after the community raised its concerns.
