Department approves 10 major investment proposals

The Department of Investment Review approved 10 major investment proposals yesterday, including plans by Quanta Computer Inc (廣達), Wistron Corp (緯創) and Inventec Corp (英業達) to expand their overseas computer, component and server production.

Quanta gained approval to invest US$973 million in its US subsidiary, Quanta Manufacturing Inc, which would in turn invest in Quanta Manufacturing Nashville LLC for computer, peripheral equipment and server assembly, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said.

Wistron received permission to invest US$150 million in its US subsidiary Wislab EMS Corp to expand printed circuit board assembly operations, the ministry said.

Inventec received approval for two overseas investments, including US$110 million in Inventec Holding (North America) Corp, which would then inject the funds into Inventec (USA) Corp for server assembly operations, and US$187.3 million in Inventec Electronics (Thailand) Co for notebook and server motherboard assembly, it said.

DRAM chipmaker Nanya Technology Corp (南亞科技) won permission to inject US$2.1 billion in British Virgin Islands-registered Nanya Technology International Ltd for general investment purposes to reduce foreign-exchange hedging costs, the ministry said.

As for inbound investments, Japanese supermarket operator Lopia Co Ltd was approved to invest NT$4.99 billion (US$156.5 million) in Lopia Taiwan Co (台灣樂比亞) to expand its supermarket business, while JPMorgan Chase & Co, Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley were permitted to invest in their Taiwanese units for securities and futures brokerage operations, the ministry said.

JPMorgan International Finance Ltd plans to invest NT$4.3 billion in JP Morgan Securities (Taiwan) Ltd (摩根大通證券), Merrill Lynch International LLC plans to invest NT$3.2 billion in Merrill Lynch Securities (Taiwan) Ltd (美林證券) and Morgan Stanley & Co International PLC plans to invest NT$6.44 billion in Morgan Stanley Securities (Taiwan) Ltd (台灣摩根士丹利證券), it said.

Meanwhile, UK-based Stonepeak Formosa 4-3 Holdings Co received approval to invest NT$4.41 billion in Formosa 4 International Investment Co (海盛國際投資) for developing the Formosa 4 Offshore Wind Project (海盛風電) off Miaoli County, including subsea foundation surveys, equipment procurement and engineering design, the ministry said.

Overall, the department said it approved US$3.52 billion in outbound investments and NT$23.34 billion in inbound investments.
