Pokémon Winds & Waves New Type Will Officially Change Everything We Know About The Series

Ever since Pokémon Winds & Waves was announced earlier this year, players have been speculating about everything from the inspiration behind its island-filled region to what new Pokémon, mechanics, and surprises could be waiting in Gen 10. Winds & Waves was officially unveiled back in February during the Pokémon Day Pokémon Presents celebrating the franchise's 30th anniversary, where The Pokémon Company debuted the games' first trailer and gave fans a lot to think about over the course of the year.
That first look introduced the new starter Pokémon, the games' protagonists, a special new-look Pikachu, and an open world built around windswept islands and a vast oceanic/tropical setting. The relatively limited amount of information revealed so far has naturally left plenty of room for theories, with fans dissecting trailers, promotional material, and alleged leaks for clues about what could be coming when the Nintendo Switch 2 exclusives launch worldwide in 2027.
One of the biggest leaks/rumors so far, however, is the concept of a brand-new Pokémon type that would completely change everything we know about the series and how evolutions can work.
Pokémon's New "Seed" Type Could Be A Game-Changer
If the rumored Seed type turns out to be real, it could be one of the biggest changes to Pokémon’s core formula in years. Rather than simply introducing another elemental type to sit alongside Fire, Water, Grass, etc., the Seed concept appears to suggest something far more ambitious: a Pokémon whose growth and development could be shaped directly by the player and take on infinite forms.
That would make Seed Pokémon fundamentally different from traditional evolutionary lines, which generally follow "predetermined" paths. A system built around player choices, environmental factors, training methods, or story progression could potentially allow the same Pokémon to develop in radically different ways between playthroughs. Even if the differences were simply cosmetic or stat-based, that level of individualization and customizability would make Seed Pokémon one of the most unique changes to the franchise in years.
It could also dramatically increase replay value, letting players experiment with different approaches simply to see what forms or abilities emerge, while the competitive community would inevitably begin testing how different development paths affect performance on the battlefield.
For a series that has relied on largely fixed evolution systems for decades, Seed Pokémon could introduce a much more dynamic relationship between trainer and Pokémon. If fully realized, it would be less of a new type and more of an entirely new way to raise Pokémon. Unfortunately, however intriguing the concept, the Seed rumors need to be taken with a massive grain of salt.
The Seed Type Pokémon Rumor Is A Little Complicated
The rumors surrounding a potential Seed Pokémon are a little more complicated than your average Poké-leak. During the infamous wave of Pokémon leaks in October 2025, rumors suggested that Winds & Waves would feature a special "Seed Pokémon" (via Reddit) that players could raise, with its eventual evolution and even parts of the surrounding environment potentially changing based on player choices.
However, that rumor was quickly called into question and eventually debunked. "Seed Pokémon" turns out to be the literal Japanese terminology used for Basic Pokémon in the Pokémon TCG, suggesting at least part of the original excitement may have resulted from a mistranslation or misunderstanding rather than confirmation of an entirely new Pokémon category.
However, the rumor got a fresh breath of life again in August 2026, when a separate round of Winds & Waves rumors mentioned Konetsu, a mysterious Pokémon described once again as a "Seed Pokémon" (via X). According to those claims, Konetsu would be powered up by defeating bosses throughout a story route known as the Legend Tour, somewhat resembling the progression surrounding Koraidon and Miraidon in Scarlet & Violet.
That certainly keeps the possibility of some kind of Seed mechanic alive, but it doesn't confirm the more ambitious interpretations of the original leak from 2025. For now, Konetsu, the Legend Tour, and virtually every detail surrounding the supposed Seed Pokémon remain unconfirmed, making this one rumor where it's particularly important to temper your expectations, even if the implications would change up everything we know about evolutionary forms in Pokémon.
