Vietnamese woman wins record $8M jackpot

A woman in An Giang Province has become the biggest jackpot winner since the Vietnam Lottery Company began selling lottery tickets in 2016.

On Oct. 12, Vietlott gave VND199.5 billion (US$7.6 million) to the winner of its Oct. 4 draw, identified only as V.N., a freelance worker in An Giang.

The amount had accumulated over 26 draws spanning two months.

At the award ceremony, she received more than VND179.6 billion after personal income tax was deducted.

She donated VND5 billion to charity.

She immediately told her family after learning she had won, she says. But she has yet to decide what to do with the money.

N. had bought the winning ticket from a mobile lottery service operated by Vietlott in partnership with telecom provider MobiFone.

The winning numbers in the draws are randomly generated by the system.

Vietlott is a state-owned enterprise owned by the Ministry of Finance.

It currently offers seven lottery games, with Mega 6/45, which N. won, being its first product.

More than 500 customers have so far won jackpots worth at least VND1 billion through Vietlott's Mega and Power lottery games, with the total payout exceeding VND12 trillion.
