30 Years Later, DC’s Best Halloween Spooky Season Story Is Still Undisputed

Jared is a writer, editor, and Communications Studies graduate who loves popular nerd culture (almost anything to do with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, or The Lord of the Rings) and the interactive storytelling medium. Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.
Part of why Batman has endured for nearly 90 years as one of the most iconic characters in the history of fiction, let alone DC comic book source material, is that he is endlessly malleable within the conventions of whatever genre palette the World’s Greatest Detective happens to inhabit. For instance, the core Batman mythos is as palatable via a campy and absurdist Adam West as it is via an angsty and solemn Robert Pattinson because the character’s stories have been running that gamut thoroughly since the 1940s.
Halloween is only a few weeks away now, and with it comes plenty of its own shades of festive tones during what’s ubiquitously understood to be the year’s spooky season. Of course, the tragedy of Bruce Wayne’s childhood and the terrors lurking in Gotham City lend themselves quite well to the assorted flavors of horror, thriller, noir, and mystery, and the perfect Batman story for readers to revisit this spooky season is the one that made it as synonymous with Halloween as Michael Myers.
Long Halloween Is The Definitive Halloween Batman Story
Batman: The Long Halloween may not be the scariest Batman story ever told, but it’s certainly one of the most compelling in terms of the breadcrumbs that its murder mysteries lay out in a trail for both Batman and the reader to follow. It’s incredibly long and winding, with the whole tale taking longer than a year to tell, which likely made it a nail-biting narrative to parse when it was originally released issue by issue. If you’ve never read Batman: The Long Halloween, it wouldn’t be too surprising if you had interpreted the book’s title literally all along and assumed that the entire 13-issue limited series was set over the course of a single Halloween night.
Indeed, Batman: Arkham Knight’s story takes place on a Halloween night, but Alfred teased that the events of Batman: The Long Halloween were canon to the Arkhamverse continuity’s lore when Batman discovers a series of dead bodies, saying:
“This is becoming rather ghastly, sir. It brings to mind a spate of murders at the beginning of your career. It was Halloween then if I’m not mistaken, turned out to be rather a long one if I recall.”
This would later be retconned—yet another retcon among foundations in Batman: Arkham lore. Nonetheless, while Batman: The Long Halloween makes for a great read this spooky season, Batman: Arkham Knight is a wonderful choice for a Halloween-themed game to play, and genuinely has some of the best jump-scares in any game ever, horror or otherwise.
Rather, Batman: The Long Halloween is not exclusive to Halloween, and distinctly features many other beloved holidays throughout the year. For example, Batman sharing Thanksgiving dinner with Solomon Grundy in Batman: The Long Halloween is one of the loveliest representations of Bruce’s empathy. Ironically, this makes Batman: The Long Halloween perfect for practically any holiday.
The Long Halloween Is One Of Batman’s Greatest Legacies
The influence that Batman: The Long Halloween has had on Batman stories cannot possibly be overstated. If you’ve consumed a ton of modern Batman media and are only now reading Batman: The Long Halloween for the first time, you’d be alarmed to realize how many movies or video games have made clear nods to the limited series, if not literal adaptations, especially if they featured Harvey Dent and a Gotham crime family like the Falcones or Maronis.
Even if you’re not a huge fan of the story or how it unfolds and are of the belief that the ending was unsatisfying, maybe you can at least appreciate Tim Sale’s phenomenal artwork. Regardless, this iconic DC limited series is worth an annual re-read for the spooky season, and there’s also a lot to adore about its excellent sequel, Batman: Dark Victory, which some fans argue is even better.
